I asked some of my readers the other day what they would like me to write more about. I received several responses but the most popular request was regarding how to better balance it all. I am not going to lie. It is not an easy feat and I just recently got the hang of how to pull it all off without getting too overwhelmed. How? I learned one simple trick that made everything work like clockwork and I would love to share it with you!
Before a few years ago, I was one of those people that absolutely loved to work out but never had the time. I also longed to compliment my life (before I got too old) with one or two hobbies, but it never seemed possible. Four years ago, I decided that I didn’t want to be that person anymore that lived my life exclusively for everybody else. I didn’t want to give in to feeling frustrated when my career peeps or kids did not fully appreciate everything I was doing for them. So I made a change and began to schedule one hour a day for me. My first decision was to hire a trainer to work out twice a week. I wrote it down on my calendar and I rarely cancelled a session. I was so happy with the results, that I soon added an extra day. All these strength training sessions were scheduled in the early morning, before work. Since they were not cardio sessions, I would take a shower before I trained and just change into my suit and head to the office immediately afterwards. Not only did I start the day doing something fun for me, I made better use of my time by skipping the rush hour traffic! Today, I work out almost every day. I schedule my workouts and rarely cancel them. I train with the same trainers on Monday mornings (my Butt Workout), Orange Theory at 5:30 or 6:45 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays, more Legs/Abs/Butt work with my sister (an amazing trainer too!) on Wednesday mornings and I do whatever I am in the mood for on Fridays. I sometimes go to early morning Yoga classes with clients too and incorporate work and play. I do most of my cardio on the weekends, when I most love to get hot and sweaty. Whether it is the super fun, hip hop dance class I take on Sundays with my niece (Videosync with Jay Marcos) or Flywheel on Saturdays with my hubby or hot yoga with my sister, I schedule it on my iPhone and look forward to it all. I have made some amazing new friends and converted old ones to embrace healthier habits while having fun in the process. I have since applied this theory to every aspect of my life. This is how you do it!!!!
Tony Robbins has a quote that sums it all up. “If you talk about it, it’s a dream, if you envision it, it’s possible, but if you schedule it, it’s real.”
Below please find a list of some of the major things I schedule and look forward to:
1) Family days (at least one day a weekend, we must have a quality family outing)
2) Family TV nights (we get together to watch our favorite shows)
3) Date nights (the secret to a happy marriage)
4) Workouts (the secret to my sanity, stress relief and feeling good about yourself)
5) Family Vacations (so fun to plan together as a family – we aim for two per year)
6) Romantic Vacations (time alone is also important – at least one per year)
7) Writing time (I love working on my blog and book and I need this creative outlet)
8) Client meetings & lunches (more connections equal more business and the more you give, the more you get)
9) Weekend Events (never let a weekend pass you by without planning something new & exciting within it!)
10) DREAMS – MOST IMPORTANT THING TO PLAN – READ BELOW
Every Sunday, I map out my workweek and fill any empty appointment slots with clients (new & old) that I want to meet. I also schedule my workouts and any events that I need to be present at for my kids, family and hubby (my top priorities). Most importantly, every morning, I take some time to meditate and dream about everything that I would love to accomplish during the day. This sets the tone and helps me be proactive towards having a happy and productive day versus reactive to everyone else’s “not always urgent” demands. There is another quote that I particularly love from Steven J. Ross that sums it up beautifully… “There are those that work all day, those that dream all day and those who spend an hour dreaming before setting off to work to fulfill those dreams. Go into the third category because there is virtually no competition.” I have taken that message a step further and use that morning hour to workout and dream. Since I have began doing this four years ago, I have been more successful and happy at home and at work plus I am fitter and feel less overwhelmed.
Well, now you know. The secret to our major balancing act as the superwomen that we are is to SCHEDULE YOUR LIFE. Lastly, don’t be afraid to get help when you need it. We are managers that manage many lives around us. It makes sense to hire a cleaning lady if you can make better use your time at work or doing something more productive with your time. Amazon Prime is a major lifesaver for me too. I order everything online (especially gifts and anything I would normally buy at Publix or CVS except fresh food) and mostly with free 2 day shipping. I also use EBATES whenever I can for cash back on purchases at most on-line sites (Nordstom, Amazon, Saks, Neiman, etc). Year to date, I have gotten back almost $300 from Ebates! I will write another post soon with other tips and suggestions, but for now, I really want to make sure you start SCHEDULING THE LIFE YOU WANT TO LIVE NOW. START TOMORROW AND DON’T LET ANYONE ELSE HOLD THE PEN WHEN WRITING THE STORY OF YOUR LIFE!!
